Focus On Jesus
“Jesus Is Calling”
(Hebrews 12:1-2) let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith
(Luke 5:1-3) One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
1. Jesus us
(Psalm 139:1-3) O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do.
(Romans 5:8) But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
2. Jesus to us
(Luke 5:4) When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”
(Luke 5:5) Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. Second park of Luke 5:5
(Luke 5:5) ….But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
(Luke 5:6-7) When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
3. Jesus us
(Luke 5:8-11) 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
What do the nets represent ?
- Peters comfort and old life- laying down his work, his skills, his security and trusting Jesus
- Human effort vs Divine abundance- Peter worked all night and caught nothing and at Jesus’ word the nets are filled to the point of breaking
- The old mission (self focused) vs The new mission (people focused)- no longer fishing for yourself but now you are on mission to help others
(John 21:3-6) 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. 5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered. 6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
