Redemption Church Living Patiently for Jesus’s Return April 6, 2025 View Archives Reveal Blanks Main Scripture Reference(s) James 5:7-12, Living Patiently for Jesus’s Return April 6, 2025 / Michael Swindell / James 5:7-12 / Redemption Church The Holy Spirit-enabled fruit of patience (“godly patience”) is produced when waiting is motivated by a Jesus-centered view of the future and combined with godly attitudes and actions. (MULTILINE REVEAL SMALL) Big Idea: Because Jesus the Judge is returning soon, we must live with godly patience as we await his coming. (MULTILINE REVEAL SMALL) Part 1: Godly patience waits for Jesus with hope. (vv. 7-8) “Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.” – James 5:7-8 (MULTILINE REVEAL SMALL) “Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.” – John 5:28-29 “Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay everyone for what he has done. I am the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end…” – Revelation 22:12-13 (MULTILINE REVEAL SMALL) Part 2: Godly patience waits for Jesus without grumbling. (vv.9-11) “Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.” – James 5:9-11 “Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy.” – Psalms 64:1 “With my voice I cry out to the Lord; with my voice I plead for mercy to the Lord. I pour out my complaint before him; I tell my trouble before him.” – Psalms 142:1-2 (MULTILINE REVEAL SMALL) “Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.” – Job 1:20-22 “So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. And he took a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he sat in the ashes. Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die.” But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.” – Job 2:7-10 “And the LORD restored the fortunes of Job…And the LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than the beginning.” – Job 42:10, 12 (MULTILINE REVEAL SMALL) Part 3: Godly patience waits for Jesus with truthful speech. (v.12) “But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your ‘yes’ be yes and your ‘no’ be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.” – James 5:12 “Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred? And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it. And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.” – Matthew 23:16-22 “O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill? He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart; …who swears to his own hurt and does not change.” – Psalms 15:1-2, 4a (MULTILINE REVEAL SMALL) “Dear friends, don’t overlook this one fact: With the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay his promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; on that day the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, the elements will burn and be dissolved, and the earth and the works on it will be disclosed. Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, it is clear what sort of people you should be in holy conduct and godliness as you wait for the day of God and hasten its coming.” – 2 Peter 3:8-12 (MULTILINE REVEAL SMALL) DID YOU KNOW?
