BAPTISM BY IMMERSION.

Vocabulary Lesson: The word baptism comes from the Greek word meaning to immerse. Everyone in the New Testament was immersed in water when baptized.

According to Matthew 3, when Jesus was baptized, He came _____________ the water.

1) near to 2) up out of 3) just above

According to Acts 8:38-39, _____________ and the Ethiopian eunuch both went down into the water.

1) Philip 2) Adam 3) Noah

According to Romans 6:4 and Colossians 2:12, we are with Christ in baptism.

1) sprinkled 2) dancing 3) buried

History Lesson: the World Book Encyclopedia records, “At first all baptism was by complete immersion, (Vol. 1, p. 651). And the Catholic Encyclopedia states, “In the early centuries, all were baptized by immersion and streams, pools, and baptisteries” (Vol. 2, p.263). Immersion was not convenient after the Roman Catholic Church instituted baptism; thus the mode was changed to sprinkling.
