Galatians 4:8-31 | The Danger of Religion

“The Danger of Religion” (Galatians 4:8-31)

V .8-10 Paul reminds us that unless we are on guard, our human tendency is to move to works based cause and effect relationship with God that always leads to slavery where our good deeds attempt to earn an identity or our position rather than the beauty of grace.

V.11-15 Self-righteous rule followers become joyless and judgmental slaves.

V.16-31 Paul then addresses those who see the law as a means of righteousness through a brief Old Testament book of Genesis bible study showing that the law is incompatible with grace. The law is good in that it is a road to guide us, but not a rod to rule us (Spurgeon). Paul uses the Genesis story to show that trying to earn God’s favor through following rules (the law) leads to spiritual bondage, while trusting in God’s promise of grace through Christ leads to true freedom.

Application:

How do I recognize if I am a religious legalist? Religion=rules without relationship. (self-examination- Check one of the boxes)

  1. Motivations: What is my motivation for “religious” activity?

To earn God’s love, to deserve it? (if I just try harder, I’ll be pleasing to God then He will do ____________ for me?

Or to respond to it? (Jesus, I am so thankful for your sacrifice and love, ask me anything and I’ll obey, because I love you and I’m grateful for giving me meaning and a destiny).

  1. Emotions: How do I “feel” about my spiritual performance?

I constantly feel guilt or anxiety about my spiritual performance. I beat myself up emotionally when I fail and fall back into sin. My joy in Christ is overshadowed by a sense of inadequacy.

I recognize I am a sinner and mess up. My sin grieves me, yet I stand firm on Romans 8:1- There is now therefore NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. I recognize that any condemnation comes from the enemy and sin that dwells within me, not Jesus.

  1. Perceptions (of others): How do I view others as they live out their faith?

I find myself looking down on others based on their adherence to religious practices compared to mine.

I readily extend grace but also a willingness to exhort others to grow closer to God.

  1. Perceptions (of God): How do I view God?

I see God primarily as a demanding taskmaster or the “cosmic killjoy”. He is distant.

I see Him as one who delights Himself in me as His child.

  1. Rejection or Contrition: How do I respond in failure?

Rejection: Is my first response in failure to hide or run from God? (like Adam and Eve)

Contrition: Do I repent and run back into the arms of a loving Father?

*Mindset of “Because I am loved, I want to change” rather than “I must change to be loved.”

  1. Devotion: What do my spiritual disciplines look like?

I engage in prayer, Bible reading, serving, etc. out of obligation. I “must” do these things.

I am refreshed regularly by them. I desire to do them because of what they accomplish.

What do I do about any legalism that I find in my life?

  1. Embrace Grace: How? Preach the gospel to yourself daily. Meditate on scripture that emphasizes God’s unconditional love and grace. For example: I read Romans over and over until I understood it. I couldn’t comprehend what prevented people from sinning under the freedom of grace. Answer: God’s unconditional love.
  2. Cultivate relationship: Don’t focus on requests as much but pray through scripture like the Psalms, focusing on the character and works of God. Practice gratitude- In everything give thanks for this is the will of God.
  3. Reframe obedience: View obedience as a response to God’s love, not to earn it. Ask God to change your heart not just behavior. This doesn’t mean we abandon spiritual disciplines or good works, but rather that these flow from love and gratitude, not obligation or fear.
  4. Seek Community: people to share your struggles and provide accountability.

Notes:

Here are a couple of blog posts I put together. I tend to put too much info into a sermon, so this is my way of letting those who want to dive deeper, get the benefit of my week’s study without overwhelming you on Sunday morning!

Is the law abolished? blog post: https://feathersoundchurch.com/blog/2024/10/15/is-the-law-abolished I wrote this one because we often think Jesus abolished the law, yet he says the opposite, not to abolish but to fulfill. So in what sense is the law still part of our lives? Read on!

How to conquer sin through Grace: https://feathersoundchurch.com/blog/2024/10/16/conquer-sin-through-grace I wrote this one because often we simply try harder to conquer our sin and grow in godliness, yet even conquering sin is a work of grace as we participate with the Holy Spirit. So, why do it since when I try harder, I just get more frustrated with my failures? Read this post!

Grow Group Questions:

  1. Can you think of a time in your own life when you realized you were relying more on religious activities than on a relationship with God? How did this realization change your approach to faith?
  2. Why do we struggle to “embrace grace”?
  3. In what areas of your life do you find it challenging to fully embrace God’s grace? How might your daily life look different if you more fully lived as a “child of the promise”?
  4. The sermon concludes with 4 suggestions on how to move from legalism to grace. Which of these do you feel you need to focus on most in your own life? What practical steps can you take this week to grow in this area?
