AUTHORITY
1 Corinthians 11:1-16
INTRODUCTION:
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV) All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
1 Corinthians 11
TEXT:
1 Corinthians 11:1-16 (NIV) 1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. 3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. 6 For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.
7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.
13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God.
Highlight:
1 Corinthians 11:1 (NIV) 1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
1 Corinthians 10:31-33 (NIV) 31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32 , whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— 33 even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.
THREE THINGS TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT :
1. OF AUTHORITY
1 Corinthians 11:3 (NIV) But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
Philippians 2:6-8a (NIV) 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!
2. OF AUTHORITY
1 Corinthians 11:8-9 (NIV) 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.
Genesis 3:16-20 (NIV) 16 To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’
“Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” 20 Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.
Genesis 3:16 (NIV) Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.
(NLT) And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you.
(ESV) Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.
Ephesians 5:21 (NIV) 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Ephesians 5:22-24 (NIV) as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife , his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
Explain how we submit to Christ…
Proverbs 31
Proverbs 31:12 (NIV) She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.
Ephesians 5:24-33 (NIV) 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body…
Ephesians 5:29b-33 (NIV) just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
Ephesians 5:33 (NIV) 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
Genesis 2:18 (NIV) The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
1 Corinthians 11:10 (NIV) 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels.
Isaiah 14:13-15 (NIV) You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly…. 14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High. 15 But you are brought down to the realm of the dead, to the depths of the pit.
1 Corinthians 11:11-12 (NIV) 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.
Luke 10:19-20 (NIV) I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
Romans 8:37 (NIV) In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
1 John 5:4 (NIV) For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.
3. OF AUTHORITY
1 Corinthians 11:4-5 (NIV) 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved.
1 Corinthians 11:5 (NIV) But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved.
1 Corinthians 11:6-7 (NIV) 6 For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.
7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.
