Why Pray for those in Authority in Government?

Gen 1:1-4 ESV  In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.  (2)  The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.  (3)  And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.  (4)  And God saw that the light was good.  And God separated the light from the darkness.

Deut 1:16-17a ESV  And I charged your judges at that time, ‘Hear the cases between your brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother or the alien who is with him.  (17a)  You shall not be partial in judgment.  You shall hear the small and the great alike.  You shall not be intimidated by anyone, for the judgment is God’s.

Rom 13:1-6 NIV  Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.  The authorities that exist have been established by God.  (2)  Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.  (3)  For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong.  Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority?  Then do what is right and you will be commended.  (4)  For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good.  But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.  (5)  Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.  (6)  This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.

1Pe 2:13-18 ESV  Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme,  (14)  or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good.  (15)  For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.  (16)  Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.  (17)  Honor everyone.  Love the brotherhood.  Fear God.  Honor the emperor.  (18)  Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust.

1Ti 2:1-6 NIV  I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—  (2)  for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.  (3)  This is good, and pleases God our Savior,  (4)  who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.  (5)  For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,  (6)  who gave himself as a ransom for all people.  This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.

Why Pray for our Government Leaders? 

 So our leaders will lead our society and government to promote:

·         Order

·         Fairness

·         Justice

·         Peace

·         Prosperity

·         Freedom
